Originated in the central Andes, Peru in South America. Belongs to the sunflower family Asteraceae.

The species is called the sunflower turns its large inflorescence because following the movement of the sun, for example, at dawn the faces east and continues to spin as the day progresses.

This plant has a very strong stem, which usually grows to more than two meters. Its leaves are large and triangular. The most colorful is the blossom, which develops to a very large and often causes the stem to tilt about their weight. The petals are bright yellow, making the sunflower possesses a unique beauty.

The variety is reproduced with seeds in spring to flower throughout the summer. It is clear that each plant grows only a flower, although in some cases reaches a greater number of flowers per plant but in a smaller size.

Sunflower should be exposed to the sun permanently, as light is a fundamental element in its growth. In addition, you need a warm, sunny and protected from the wind.

Plenty of water it is important for growth, but otherwise not support the standing water, as their root rots easily.

Transplants are not recommended for this species and the soil must be properly credited.

The sunflower is an ideal plant to provide vision and harmoniously colored to any garden.

The sunflower is a plant that blooms all summer, and can continue until fall if spent flowers are cut and never lacks the sun, deep pot and a fertile land.

Conócelo
Its botanical name is Helianthus stem and consists of a fairly robust (no branches, but focuses all its energy into producing a single stem with one flower), leaves large, oval and serrated edges, and a large flower, similar to a daisy, very large, even in the smaller varieties.

Garden Variety
It can grow into different types of sunflowers:
- Helianthus decapetalus. This is a summer plant that can keep flowering until late autumn if the weather is mild.
- Helianthus multiflorus. Robust and vigorous plant that grows best in moist soils and
permeable.
- Helianthus angustifolius. This variety prefers moist, fertile soil.
- Helianthus atrorubens. Its flower is very ephemeral, but abundant, and golden yellow (about 8 cm in diameter). Must be located in full sun.

Fundamental flower

Care
Light is fundamental. The sunflower needs a warm location, sunny and sheltered from the wind. It is resistant to any temperature, but not frost.

We must thoroughly water the plant during growth and flowering stage, but always avoiding stagnation of water. Keep in mind that they are very susceptible to stem rot by over watering.

On the ground, must be very fertile, so if planted directly in the garden is essential to enrich it with plenty of organic matter.

Council
They can not take either transplants, it is best sown directly in pots or seed.
Detail
Helianthus angustifolius The variety is perfect for use as cut flowers.
