Garden – ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Tripelata’, Two New Magnolias

It is called ‘Sunrise’. Newcomer into the family of magnolia grandiflora, it is distinguished by its two-color tones composed of red flames on a white background. His preference is for a sunny spot – there may reach 5 meters in height – but it also tolerates partial shade. Its compact habit makes it possible to integrate the back of some solid or in a drawer. Allow input of peaty soil at planting.

Also new in 2010, magnolia Tripelata is characterized by very large leaves (60 cm) light green, turning red in autumn. Its flowering, white cream is scented.
There are two major “families” of magnolias:
- The mangolia of Soulange (soulangeana) and Star (stellata), deciduous, bloom in early spring before the leaves appear.
- The large-flowered magnolia (grandiflora), with evergreen, blooms summer comes.
Exposure: sun, part shade.
Planting: All year, beyond the gel. Note that the deciduous magnolias are planted, preferably in autumn. The persistent tend to install the spring. In any case, do not bury too deeply and generously sprinkle the summer, the first year.
Hardiness: The magnolias safely support the -15 ° C, although it is prudent for essentially the ‘stellata’, not to expose them to too much wind. The late frosts can be damaging to buds in spring, without putting the future of the endangered plant.
Size: Possible to create or rejuvenate the tree / shrub, it is done after flowering.
