Gerbera jamesonii
Colorful perennial plant native to the Transvaal (South Africa), or gerbera daisy Transvaal is very suitable as indoor decoration, but can also be placed on the balcony or patio when there is no risk of frost. Large flowers, like daisies, are available in a wide range of colors and single or double varieties. This plant blooms almost all summer. It needs protection from cold during the winter and move into the units that are on the terrace before the frosts have arrived.
Transvaal daisy tolerates a minimum of 8 º C and with good ventilation, a maximum of 21 º C. A protected terrace, facing south, is the ideal location to provide the necessary temperature plant.
You can place it outdoors in bright sunlight. However, at home, you must protect from the glare of midday, as temperatures may exceed those recommended.
Let the soil dry slightly between waterings, but try to keep it moist during the growing season. If temperatures are low, reduce the amount of water. From late fall through early spring, water the plant just enough to prevent drying.
The moisture level is only important if temperatures exceed the recommended maximum of 21 º C. In general, you should try to reduce the temperature as the velvety leaves of this plant moisture poorly tolerated and can get a fungal infection called botrytis.
Give it every fortnight during the growing season with fertilizer at half the recommended dose.
Transplant in spring using loam with good drainage. You can also split the larger fish in separate pots.
Do not use polishing substances to the leaves as they may appear unsightly stains. Nor wipe with a damp cloth. Remove dust with a little brush with bellows of those used by photographers.
