postheadericon Why Is Your Rose Garden Failing?

So you have attempted to grow some beautiful roses in your garden only to see them fail. This is a very discouraging thing to have happen, for sure, but you can rise above it. There are some common reasons why roses fail to thrive or even to start blooming and you may see one or two of them listed below that apply to your garden.

1. Lack of water

Before the buds begin to set your roses are going to need a lot of water. This water needs to reach deep down into the soil and it must be provided regularly. This gets tricky, however, since you’ll need to have enough irrigation in place for this large amount of water so that the roots don’t rot. It is a fine balancing act that needs to be set up properly for your roses to thrive.

2. Setting the roses too deeply

When you purchase a container of roses you’ll need to make sure that you transplant them into the ground at the same level as they are in the container. If you set the roses too deeply into the ground you may not see any buds growing. If they are put into the ground too high up you’ll see foliage develop but no roses.

3. Roses are too young

It could also be a problem with the age of the roses you have purchased. Roses don’t start to bloom until they are 2-3 years old and the ones you have planted may be too young.

4. Not enough sun

Roses need a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight every day to thrive. If your rose bushes are getting too much shade they are less likely to bloom and are more likely to develop diseases.

5. The soil pH

You’ll need to have the right soil pH for your roses. It should be in the 6.0 up to 6.8 range. If the pH isn’t at this level your roses won’t flower.

If all else fails you may have to resort to artificial roses to adorn your table this year. Fortunately you can give it a try next year, and hopefully you’ll be clipping the real thing instead of using artificial roses to decorate your home.
